Introduction
Songworks is best described as a composer's workshop. It can be used to notate and print sheet music or to export a MIDI file of your music, but its primary focus is on the creative process. You can stimulate your melodic imagination by asking the program to suggest ideas in any chosen meter or key, with or without chordal accompaniment; you can transform and extend ideas you like using transform tools such as tonal or real inversion, retrograde, tonal or real transpositions, etc. You can ask the program to suggest chords for a tune of your own, or ask it to suggest a melody idea to go with chords of your own. You can easily enter and rework lyrics, which can be entered a whole phrase at a time without needing to manually lock them to each note. Because Songworks uses the same file format as Practica Musica it also contains notational features particulary intended for education use, such as stick notation (notes with invisible heads) and notehead-only notation (notes with hidden stems). Editing of music is optimized for ease-of-use: though there are various "shortcuts," you can always just use the equivalent of two-finger typing: click on a symbol and then click where you want it to go or play the pitch to enter a note. Songworks does not limit you to a set number of measures per line: measures take only as much space as their material warrants, and barlines can be dragged to stretch or compress measures as desired. Notes can be dragged up or down to change their pitch. When listening you can choose to hear all staves at once or just some of them, which is good for practicing a part. You can do what we call "active listening," tapping the rhythm of a given part to hear it together with its accompaniment. There is a lot here to play with, so have fun!
